Is Hell a “Place of eternal torment” or is Hell a “state of being of the Soul”? How should we understand the word “Hell” as it is used the Bible? Leaders from various religious denominations are questioning the traditional interpretation of the doctrine of Hell. In a surprising homily (July 1999), Pope John Paul II is quoted as stating that “the essential characteristic [of Hell] … is that of a state of being of spirit or human soul … the language of place is inadequate to describe the reality [of Hell]”. “Hellbound?” is a 2013 documentary release that includes interviews with clergy, lay people and esteemed theologians from a wide range of traditions. The interviews capture the range of beliefs about the nature of Hell – ranging from a “place of eternal torment” to a “state of being of the human soul”.
